Atty is expected to be launched into the Arctic Ocean some time next week

Sir David Attenborough is to be renamed ‘Atty McAttface’, in tribute to the failed attempt to name Britain’s new polar research ship ‘Boaty McBoatface’.

The ship was named the RRS Sir David Attenborough despite overwhelming public support for the Boaty moniker, by spoilsport science minister Jo Johnson MP, MP.

But a naming committee agreed that if Sir David’s name was to be transferred, then he himself was going to need a new one.

Professor Hamish McEyebrau, of the Slough School of Polar Research and Strange Names, said “Sir David Att- excuse me, Sir Atty McAttface is a national treasure, and as such it is in the public interest that we have a suitable name for him, chosen by the nation.

“After extensive online polling, the name ‘Atty McAttface’ was voted for by an enormous public majority.

“I shall be visiting the great naturalist later on to break a bottle of champagne on his face and inscribe the new name across his bows.”
