John Major “surprised but delighted” after Wimbledon victory

Sir John Major has said he is “surprised – delighted but surprised!” after beating Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon yesterday.

The 72 year old former Prime Minister, who beat the 28 year old defending champion in 4 sets, said “I didn’t know I had it in me! To be honest it’s the first time I’d picked up a racket since school.”

To the surprise of many pundits, the racket Major used was in fact the old school racket mentioned, a vintage wooden affair – certainly a strange choice against Djokovic’s expensive graphene one.

Major lost the gruelling first set 11-13, at which point he realised that he had left the heavy wooden protector over his racket’s head. After removing that he took the remaining three sets 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0.

But despite thrashing Novak with a display of textbook tennis, the famously modest Major insisted that it was just luck, adding “He’s a brilliant player, and to be honest on any other day I am sure he could more than hold his own against anyone. Props to him for playing so well.”

The Serb praised the two-time tory PM, saying “He was amazing. And how did he play that well wearing a suit? He only took the jacket off in the third set! It was a whitewash.”

Sir John said he enjoyed his experience immensely, but isn’t sure he will play again, as the tournament interfered with his crosswords and watching Quincey.
