John Major wins snooker World Championship

The former conservative prime minister won 18-15 in a match that went to the final session, after initially trailing Bingham. An astonishing achievement, given that Major only took up the sport five months ago.

John Virgo said this morning “I don’t think anyone could have predicted this result, but it was fully deserved. Major beat Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump and Shaun Murphy to get here, and he took Bingham apart with consummate skill.

“He even beat Ronnie’s 5 minutes 20 seconds record for a maximum break. We said that would never be beaten, but there was Major yesterday, knocking in a 147 in a cool 4 minutes 59 seconds. Outstanding.”

The ever-modest Sir John said this morning that he felt “extremely lucky to have won, but really I am sure I didn’t deserve it at all. Must have been a fluke. All those other players are the ones you should be praising. Stuart especially, he played marvellous stuff, and on any other night would have thrashed me.”

But despite his sportsmanship, the former PM’s performance was simply incredible, and was universally acclaimed by pundits ranging from former 6-time world champion Steve Davis through to Lord of the Vampires, Ray Reardon.

Major’s manager and trainer, Douglas Hurd, said today “I am not sure that John is considering pursuing snooker any further for now. Having just beaten both Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in boxing matches on consecutive days, as well as winning the London marathon, I think he’s looking for a new challenge.

“But you never know. Watch this space.”
