The judges singled out Major’s ‘Maastricht Muffins’ as one of this year’s highlights

Sir John Major said he was “surprised but delighted” after his victory in yesterday’s final of the 2014 Great British Bake Off.

Judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood agreed that the former Conservative prime minister had been “Ahead of the competition from the start.

“His technique and dish-choices were adventurous, experimental and exciting, but he never lost sight of the basic aim- to create really tasty food. And that is what the GBBO is all about.”

Major said “I really did not expect this. The competition was so strong; Nancy Birtwhistle, Richard Burr, Luis Troyano and Michael Heseltine – any of them could have won.

“But on the day my windmill, with a poem I wrote for Edwina done in icing all over the roof, is the one the judges picked, and I am delighted.”

Major’s victory marks the first time a high-ranking Conservative has triumphed in a national baking competition since 1980, when Douglas Hurd won the ‘Political Puff-Pastry’ title, and a year’s apprenticeship to the pastry chef of the Iranian embassy.
