John Major storms through US Open to take 18th Grand Slam title

It’s even more impressive that he won without taking his jacket off

Former British Prime Minister Sir John Major said he was “Over the moon” about his victory in the US Open on Sunday, which saw him join Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert in 4th place on the list of greatest women’s singles title-winners.

He beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-3 6-3 to take victory – an impressive feat for a 71 year old ex-politician, playing against a professional tennis superstar at the top of her game.

Speaking with characteristic humility, Major said “Of course I’m delighted – but sometimes I must confess I don’t know how I manage to win these things at all. Caroline played brilliantly, and I fully believe that on another day she would have thrashed me.”

Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert joined Major for the trophy ceremony, and the gracious ex-Prime Minister made a great show of sportspersonship in bowing to each of them, and to his vanquished opponent. They then presented him with a grey tie with the number 18 emblazoned on it in a striking pattern of grey-on-grey.

Commentator Sue Barker said “Sir John has cemented his reputation as one of Britain’s greatest ever tennis players. Not since Margaret Thatcher dominated the Men’s Singles in the 1980s have we seen a star of this calibre.

“Between them, Thatcher and Major have shown the world that British Prime Ministers continue to excel at sports, just as they did in the days when Gladstone and Disraeli dominated World Judo throughout the later 19th century.”
