Houses of Parliament “might not last forever and ever and ever”

It is looking unlikely that this building will still be here in a hundred-thousand years' time...

The unprecedented revelation that the Palace of Westminster is a fairly old building, and will almost certainly deteriorate over time, has shocked Ministers this morning, and led to calls from the House of Commons Commission that virgins be sacrificed on altars in the streets to delay the inevitable.

Perfectly commonplace problems of subsidence and general shifting in the foundations and facades of old buildings have, in the case of the HoP, been exacerbated by the fuckwittery of building a huge carpark nearby and expanding the tube by making massive tunnels directly underneath the building.

“Oh, so we voted Conservative…?” says squeezed middle

People all over Britain woke up this morning, got out of bed, had breakfast, switched on the news or read the paper, and then suddenly realised they had voted for a Conservative government.

Generally these people are members of the ‘squeezed middle’, so-named because they have jobs – and therefore can’t be working class – but, crucially, not jobs where they essentially do nothing for an enormous amount of money – and therefore they are not amongst the wealthier upper-middle and upper classes.
